One Thing Most Americans Agree On: No Cuts to Social Security Disability

SocSec3

It is rare that even a small group of people, let alone the over 330 million Americans that live in the United States, can all agree on something. From how schools should run, to gun control, to immigration, healthcare, and everything else political under the sun, Americans have a lot to say, and those who represent them have their own opinions too. However, there is one thing that the vast majority of Americans in the United States can agree on: that important Social Security Disability benefits for millions of disabled and retired individuals should not be cut. To wit, according to MSNBC News, a whopping 80% of Americans support the program, and disabled and retired Americans’ access to these important benefits.

Despite the fact that the majority of Americans want the Social Security Disability program to stay, Republican politicians have recently made statements that trend towards cutting this important program. But is it possible for the incoming U.S. President and the Republican party to do away with Social Security Disability? We discuss this important issue here.

Conflicting Statements about Social Security Disability Cuts Lead Disabled and Retired Americans to Scratch Their Heads

At the outset, whether U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump and the Republican party actually plan to cut the Social Security Disability program is shrouded in a bit of mystery. In 2016, when Trump ran in the Republican presidential primary, he specifically addressed the Social Security program, stating, “I’m not going to cut Social Security like every other Republican.” However, Trump’s efforts to cast himself as the protector of Social Security Disability require Americans to believe that he has taken a 180-degree turn: in a 2000 book, he claimed that the program is “a huge Ponzi scheme” and in 2004 he called the program’s solvency “a huge problem now.” Even more concerning for many disabled and retired Americans are the statements made by Trump’s inner circle: during the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign, Trump supporter and now U.S. Government department head Elon Musk declared that he wants to cut spending by $2 trillion, cutting government programs. With Social Security representing the “single largest program” in the budget, disability advocates and Social Security Disability recipients worry that Social Security Disability may be Musk’s first target. Meanwhile, a number of other Republicans in the U.S. Government have advocated for cuts to the program. Rep. Rich McCormick of Georgia stated that “We’ve gotta bring the Democrats in and talk about Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare…There’s hundreds of billions of dollars to be saved and we know how to do it. We just have to have the stomach to actually take those challenges on.” Sen. Mike Lee of Utah posted an even more scathing review of the program, stating on the Social Media platform “X”, “…And let’s talk about how this system is set up to fail. The demographic shift? More retirees, fewer workers. It’s almost fair to compare it to a Ponzi scheme that’s running out of new investors.”

At the end of the day, however, it remains to be seen whether the incoming president and those in the Republican party will actually make cuts to Social Security Disability, and whether other plans may impact the program for millions of Americans.
