Social Security Administration Introduces Streamlined Online SSI Application
SSI Application Simplification Effort Begins
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a significant advancement in its ongoing efforts to simplify the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) application process. Starting in December, the SSA will launch an online, streamlined application for specific applicants. SSI provides essential monthly payments to individuals with disabilities and older adults who have limited income and resources.
Introducing iClaim Expansion for a More Accessible Process
The initial phase, known as the iClaim expansion, is designed to establish a fully online, user-friendly application for SSI. This new platform will feature user-tested, plain-language questions, pre-populated answers where possible, and seamless step-by-step transitions. The primary goal is to reduce both the time required to complete the application and the processing time for initial claim decisions.
“Over the past year, we have engaged with applicants, advocates, and our workforce to understand how we can make the SSI application process more accessible,” stated Martin O’Malley, Commissioner of Social Security. “Our communities deserve an application process that is less burdensome and more dignified, and this is an important first step in realizing that vision.”
Who Will Benefit from the iClaim Expansion?
The iClaim expansion will initially be available to first-time applicants between the ages of 18 and nearly 65 who have never married and are applying for both Social Security benefits and SSI simultaneously. The second phase of this initiative, expected to roll out by late 2025, aims to expand this simplified online application to all SSI applicants.
Federal Register Notice and Future Simplifications
The Federal Register Notice, which outlines these changes, was published today and reflects feedback previously received by Social Security. To read the notice, visit the Federal Register.
Subsequent steps in simplifying SSI applications will incorporate insights from the iClaim expansion. This will eventually extend to in-person, phone, mobile, and paper-based processes, including the development of a simplified child SSI application.
A Continuous Effort to Improve the Applicant Experience
These improvements aim to enhance the experience for both applicants and SSA staff, ensuring a smoother, more efficient process. The SSA’s commitment to continuous feedback, particularly from underserved communities, will play a crucial role in refining these efforts.
